How fantastic is California?
Sometimes I forget because I’ve lived here my whole life, but the diversity of landscapes and climates in this huge state is simply amazing. I’ve lived here almost 26 years and done a fair amount of traveling, and there are still parts I haven’t seen.
Montaña de Oro State Park was one of those parts.
It reminded me of Big Sur with its rugged coastline and abundant wildflowers. The campsites were busy but didn’t feel crowded, and the weather in the mornings and evenings was foggy and cool, just the way I like it. We also saw a fair bit of wildlife — deer, cottontail, raccoons, quail, and even a rattlesnake on the trail during our morning hike.
How cute is this baby bunny that was sniffing around our campsite?
The boys brought their bikes and had a great time cruising around the trails and exploring the coastline, and my camera got plenty of exercise, so it was definitely fun for the whole family.
Another perk of being in Californa – poppies all the way through September!
It was a lovely way to spend a Saturday, but I’m already itching to go back for a full camping trip so I can explore more. When I complain about living here (Which I admittedly do. A lot.) remind me that I’m only a two-and-a-half hour drive from this gorgeous place, and go ahead and smack me while you’re at it. I probably deserve it.
It feels slightly unfair that I’m here enjoying nature’s beauty while so many people in other parts of the world are battling its more vicious side. I’ve been fervently praying for everyone affected by the recent fires, earthquakes, and hurricanes, especially those without the resources to evacuate or prepare.

I’m so completely an utterly smitten with California! As a transplant from the east coast, it still is such a magical place in my eyes. I would still love to get out and see more of it though, because it’s such a huge, diverse, incredible place. Your photos are a beautiful example of just that. Thank you for sharing this fresh perspective!

It really is a magical place. If you ever want recommendations, let me know! I’ve been to a lot of beautiful places without crossing the state border. 🙂
